English:

I’ve moved in as a stranger, I’m moving on a stranger again. „With these words starts the“ Winterreise „, one of the most famous German song cycles of the Romantic period. Franz Schubert succeeded with this setting of the poems of Wilhelm Müller, a representation of human pain and the feeling of strangeness, the isolation in their own country. The listener becomes more and more the companion of the young traveling journeyman, who, out of the experience of disappointed love, moves into the winter night and increasingly isolates himself from human society. He wanders through the German winter without a goal and without hope in twenty-four songs. The end of the Winterreise allows many interpretations. Some see in the picture of the „Lyreman“ death by freezing, the hiding behind the art or the homelessness far away from the society, others see the wanderer himself at the end of his journey as an old man. It should be noted that the cycle ends with a question to the lyre man, whatever he may symbolize for the individual listener: „Do you want to turn your lyre to my songs?“ There is no answer, no decision within the work.

«Extranjero, me mudé, extranjero, despegué otra vez».
